Nineteen-hundred fifteen marked the first full year of fighting in World War I. At the beginning of the year, burgeoning poet Rubert Brooke died of sepsis following a mosquito bite. He was 27 years old. In early May of that year, the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by German Navy U-Boats. The catastrophe claimed nearly 2,000 souls.
