June 16, 1904 is the day on which the action of James Joyce’s epic novel Ulysses takes place. It marks the day on which Joyce had his first date with his lifelong partner, Nora Barnacle.  This day is known as Bloomsday, after the protagonist of Ulysses, Mr. Leopold Bloom, known affectionately as Poldy.
