Eighteen-hundred sixty-two was the second year of the American Civil War. Later in the year, author Louisa May Alcott takes on a pivotal, life-changing role, entering into the nursing staff at Union Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her experiences nursing there would have a continuing effect on her literary life and work. In France, Victor Hugo would publish his seminal novel, Les Misérables.
