Eighteen-Hundred Thirty-One saw the ascension to the British throne of Queen Victoria, and is therefore marked as the beginning, not only of her long reign, but of the Victorian Era. This era is associated with the height of British imperialism, the rise of the novel as a great demotic form, and with the rise of nationalism on the continent of Europe.
