In Europe, broadly, and England, particularly, 1593 was dominated wholly by a severe outbreak of Bubonic Plague. In London, the theaters were closed. It was likely during this time that William Shakespeare, instead of writing for the stage, penned one of his few long narrative poems, Venus and Adonis.
