W. W. Jacobs, whose full name is William Wymark Jacobs, was an English writer best known for his short stories, particularly the classic tale “The Monkey’s Paw.” Born on September 8, 1863, in Wapping, London, Jacobs was the eldest son of Wymark Jacobs, a wharf manager and amateur artist, and his wife, Sophia Wymark.

Jacobs received his education at St. Paul’s School in London, where he demonstrated an early interest in literature and storytelling. However, financial constraints forced him to leave school at the age of 14 to work and contribute to the family income. He found employment in the civil service, where he held various positions throughout his early career.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jacobs began his foray into writing, initially contributing humorous sketches to magazines and newspapers. His writing style was characterized by a keen sense of humor and a talent for capturing the nuances of everyday life. While he achieved some success with his early works, it was the publication of “The Monkey’s Paw” in 1902 that catapulted him to literary fame.

“The Monkey’s Paw” is a supernatural short story that revolves around a magical monkey’s paw that grants its possessor three wishes. However, these wishes come with unintended and tragic consequences. The story’s success brought Jacobs widespread recognition and remains a classic example of the horror genre.

Apart from “The Monkey’s Paw,” Jacobs wrote numerous other short stories, many of which were collected in volumes such as “Sea Urchins” (1898) and “The Lady of the Barge” (1902). His stories often explored themes of fate, irony, and the consequences of human actions.

In addition to his short stories, Jacobs authored a few novels, including “Many Cargoes” (1896) and “At Sunwich Port” (1902). While he continued to write for various publications, including “The Strand Magazine,” his short stories remained his most enduring and celebrated works.

W. W. Jacobs spent the latter part of his life in Wargrave, Berkshire, where he lived with his wife, Agnes Eleanor Williams, whom he had married in 1900. He continued to write until his death on September 1, 1943, at the age of 79.
