Clement Clarke Moore was an American professor of Oriental and Greek literature, as well as a theologian, born in New York City. He is best known for his enduring contribution to literature, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas.”

Moore hailed from a prominent and well-educated family. His father, Benjamin Moore, was the Episcopal Bishop of New York, and his mother, Charity Clarke, was from a wealthy and influential family. Clement Moore received a classical education at Columbia College, graduating in 1798. His academic prowess led him to become a professor of rhetoric and belles-lettres at Columbia, where he worked for over 25 years.

Despite his achievements in academia, Moore’s fame today is largely attributed to his anonymous publication of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1823. The poem, which he initially wrote for his children, describes the iconic image of Santa Claus and his reindeer on Christmas Eve. The verses are credited with shaping the modern image of Santa Claus and establishing many of the familiar traditions associated with Christmas.

Clement Clarke Moore’s authorship of the poem was initially disputed, as he had published it anonymously. However, he later acknowledged its creation, and it became one of the most beloved and widely read Christmas poems in the English language.

Beyond his literary contributions, Moore was deeply involved in the Episcopal Church. He played a crucial role in the development of the General Theological Seminary in New York City, serving as a professor and board member. His theological writings and lectures contributed to the intellectual life of the church during the 19th century.
