History, also known as historical writing or historiography, encompasses a diverse and complex body of writing, filmmaking, and audio recording that seeks to study and interpret the past. It is a discipline that has been transformed across time, in no small part by certain of the exemplary figures whose work has stood the test of time; history as we’ve come to understand it has also shaped by the intellectual, cultural, and societal changes of different eras—and in many cases by historical events, themselves.
